“I have this idea in my mind that winning at the Olympics is going to be the first time where I really, truly feel what winning is like,” proclaimed Helen Maroulis, the braids-rocking, 25-year-old Olympic wrestler who stars in the exclusive Vogue.com video above. “Everything else has just been part of the process leading up to that. At the 2015 Worlds”—by which she means the World Wrestling Championships, where she won first place—“when I was at the podium, I was just like, ‘Oh, this is good visualization. I’m going to visualize that this is the Olympics.’ ”
Maroulis will begin her bid for the gold in Rio on Thursday. The “everything else” to which she referred constitutes nearly two decades of intense training and sacrifice to get to this point.
