Each year the curators of the Costume Institute use the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s important collections to explore themes that place historical fashion within the context of contemporary culture. While the subjects of these shows change, the opening fundraising gala remains, always, the hottest ticket in town. It truly is The Party of the Year.

It’s not only the galleries that are “a reflection of our changing culture,” explains Vogue’s Hamish Bowles in this video; the red carpet, too, is “an ever more glamorous arena for high fashion.” The antithesis of a come-as-you-are party, the Met Gala is a come-to-see-and-be-seen event like no other.

Watch as Bowles winnows the history of the Met Gala in a 60-second flash.
